Omaha, Jun 2, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - The nonprofit organization, Caregiver Support Services, which specializes in training and support for frontline caregivers, is now releasing their training in an online format. Caregivers - both family members and professionals - can now take advantage of a new educational offering on how to prevent the spread of infection.
Eboni Green, the co-founder of Caregiver Support Services, says, "It's important for both laypeople and professionals working in home care settings to know how to take good care, and know what to look for that may indicate either bacterial or viral infections."
Numerous individuals are caring for a family member or aging client, many of whom are at an increased risk for infection. This course is for: Home Caregivers; Nursing Assistants; Family Caregivers; Non-Medical Home Caregivers; and Companions. It also serves as a refresher course for experienced health care workers.
The course emphasizes the importance of protecting the elderly and people with pre-existing conditions because they are more susceptible to bacteria and viruses. The course provides specific strategies for caregivers to protect themselves as well, to prevent the spread. The multi-module training is available now on Udemy.
Topics include: the differences between bacteria and viruses; an overview of common bacteria and viruses; tips for preventing the spread of bacteria and viruses; best practices for effective handwashing; the application and safe removal of gloves; conditions that affect or promote the growth of bacteria; six ways that bacteria and viruses are spread; and who is at the greatest risk of developing an infection?
Participants will receive a 12-page booklet outlining best practices, in addition to a printable infographic. The course takes approximately one hour to complete, at the end of which participants can take a quiz to test their knowledge, then receive a certificate of completion.
"What is different about this course," she says, "Are the practical guides that go with the training. You might take a general course but it wouldn't necessarily provide the breadth or depth of the information we're offering.
Dr. Green teaches nursing assistants and medication aides. She says this course was in development for approximately six months by the time the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. "It is even more important at this time because individuals caring for people are now at an even higher risk of contracting or spreading infection. That's why we want to make sure frontline caregivers are educated."
Dr. Green earned her RN from Iowa Western Community College in Sioux City, IA, and her PhD. in Healthcare Administration from Capella University, where the focus of her dissertation was caregiver wellness.
Dr. Green operates Caregiver Support Services with her husband, who earned a Bachelor's Degree in economics and business from Morningside College in Sioux City, IA, as well as an MBA from Bellevue University in Nebraska. "This is just the first of several courses we plan to bring online, in order to provide greater access."
"I started my career as a nursing assistant, so I've done it myself, in addition to working as a long-term care administrator," she says, "Increasing access to this type of education is vitally important."
"Caregivers are the lifeblood of the healthcare system," Dr. Green says, "We provide the majority of care to clients who want to stay in their home. It is my goal to provide them with an exceptional educational experience."
